Remains of the Ruins I
Remains of the Ruins I was inspired by a photograph I took in Eulji-ro during the summer. Among the narrow backstreets filled with old, decaying buildings, I unexpectedly found small plants pushing through and growing on their own, sustained only by rain.
By zooming in so that the plants fill the canvas, I erased their lifeless surroundings and emphasized their vitality. The work reflects my hope that seemingly fragile beings—like these untended plants—can endure and survive against larger, more powerful forces such as redevelopment.

Remains of the Ruins II
Remains of the Ruins II was inspired by my photography project in Eulji-ro, a central district of Seoul facing redevelopment. While many of its buildings are abandoned and decaying, I came across a block of wood that appeared vibrant and alive.
I focused on depicting its texture in detail, so that within the gray surroundings the wood could stand as a symbol of resilience—reflecting the people who continue to endure in the midst of powerful forces such as redevelopment.
